Turf Disease
What is turf disease?
The most common lawn disease is a fungal infection called either "Red Thread" or "Pink Patch" depending on whether it exhibits as a tiny red barb sticking out from the infected blade of grass or as pink, fluffy blobs in amongst the damaged area.
It doesn't do any permanent damage to the grass plant itself, it only damages each
blade it infects and they will regrow once the fungus is removed or dies.
However, if there is a lot it can spoil your
lawn by creating dead looking patches of grass. It can appear at any time of year when if there are warm, damp conditions.
How to Control
Fertiliser helps as it encourages the grass to grow and the fungus can often be mown away.
Also improving drainage (aeration) and
thinning the thatch (scarification) will help more water to drain away from the surface, reducing the conditions the fungus likes.
If there are a lot of damaged areas you may want to treat the lawn with a Fungicide to kill the fungus. The damaged grass will then grow out and be mown away in time. The new grass that grows will be uninfected and nice and green.
